More info: Since the 1990s, there have been tremendous efforts to re-establish a breeding population of peregrine falcons in Kentucky.
The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources ( KDFWR ) has placed nest boxes for peregrines at many locations throughout Kentucky, including sites at LG&E and KU's Trimble County, Mill Creek, Ghent and E.W. Brown generating stations.
The power plant installations provide very good facilities for peregrine falcons with crevices and alcoves similar to nesting sites they would use in the wild and the nest boxes give safe nesting opportunities to the peregrines.
KDFWR is able to monitor the survival and productivity of peregrine falcons by banding the chicks. They are able to see where the peregrine falcons disperse to after fledging and where birds from out of state originated, as well as keeping track of each peregrine falcon chick’s history. The banding database is available for all departments of fish and wildlife in North America.
