Flamingos have few natural predators because they live in remote, inhospitable places. Their mostly alkaline diet does not fit the needs of other animals. By eating the smallest of organisms, they not only keep watering holes productive, they also help circulate the waters by turning over the mud and silt on the bottom of rivers, streams, and ponds.

The Chilean flamingo is the most numerous of the south American flamingos. Estimated total population is not more than 200,000 individuals, and the population is sadly in a decline.

The Chilean Flamingo’s diet is almost entirely dependent on algae and plankton it gets from the salt lagoons and soda lakes it claims as its habitat. Being that they are restricted to these environments, it makes them extremely susceptible to habitat loss and water pollution.
