More info: In New Jersey, many once-common species have declined in numbers as a result of habitat loss and fragmentation. Wildlife will be attracted into a backyard, by providing the correct habitat. Food, cover and water are the three essentials every form of wildlife requires, no matter what the species.

Planting a variety of native plants will provide year-round sources of nutrition. It is important to include some plants that offer flowers and fruits during the early spring, late fall, and winter months, when food is often scarce. Allowing the seed heads of flowers and grasses to remain standing at the end of the season, will provide a winter food source for birds and other wildlife.

Brush piles can also provide cover and breeding sites for small mammals including chipmunks and white-footed mice.

Providing shelter with low-lying shrubs or structures such as bird and bat houses and wood piles offers protection and breeding sites for ground-nesting birds and small mammals.

Evergreen trees provide better cover for birds and allow them to take shelter during snowstorms or blizzards, as well as providing nesting sites. Shrubs and small trees will also give a source of food.

Ponds provide watering sites for birds and mammals and provide breeding sites for many reptiles and amphibians.
