Being a protected area in the Limpopo Province in South Africa, Balule Nature Reserve is a member of the Associated Private Nature Reserves (APNR) with no fences separating APNR reserves and the Kruger National Park.

The area attracts a diverse variety of birds and wildlife, including Lion, White Rhino, Buffalo, Leopard, Cheetah and other African game. Hippos can be found at the Olifants River which runs through the centre of the park and also attracts waders and other birds. Balule is home to more than 250 species of birds, including the Big Six of raptor species : Kori Bustard, Gound Hornbill, Lappet faced Vulture, Pels Fishing Owl, Martial Eagle and Saddle billed Stork.
