More info: There are several species of turtles at the Southyorkshire Fish and Terrapin Rescue including musk, map, painted, European pond turtles and river cooters.

There are no naturally occurring species of turtle in the UK though the European pond turtle did exist between five to ten thousand years ago. There is currently a movement amongst Rewilders to reintroduce this species to the UK and have it reclassified as a native species. They are occasionally seen in the wild as a result of bring released or escaping from captivity.

The European pond turtle is also called the European pond terrapin and the European pond tortoise.

They like to inhabit a natural pond as opposed to lakes and rivers and spend a large part of the day basking on land, but will dive back into the water if disturbed
