More info: The American alligator is sometimes referred to as a gator, or common alligator. It is an apex predator and large crocodilian reptile, native to the Southeastern United States and a small section of northeastern Mexico.

In the wild, hunting had decimated their population, and it was listed as an endangered species by the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Their numbers have since increased and it was removed from endangered status in 1987.
