More info: The two brothers Benji and Balu are European brown bears, also called Eurasian brown bears, who arrived at the sanctuary on the Isle of Wight in June 2025. The bears were rescued after spending years inside a small cage outside a restaurant in Azerbaijan. You can read about their rescue and all the incredible people and organisations involved here
Wildheart Animal Sanctuary have created a habitat for Benji and Balu that will stimulate and encourage all of their natural behaviours, allowing them to rehabilitate from their previous traumas, and give them the opportunity to become bears again.
The European brown bear is one of the largest predators in Europe. With its thick fur and strong build, it is perfectly adapted to different habitats. Brown bears are omnivores and feed on nuts, berries, seeds, fungi, fruit, fish, small mammals and invertebrates. They have a thick layer of fat to insulate them from the cold and to act as storage of nutrients to survive the winter when food is scarce.
The European brown bear is a shy predator with an outstanding sense of smell. They can also hear very well. These sensitive capabilities enable them to detect potential food over several kilometres.
