More Info: African penguins have been classified as an endangered species since 2010 and they face a very real risk of extinction in their natural environment. The California Academy of Sciences participates in a global breeding program aimed at strengthening the genetic makeup of the African penguin population, as well as field work in South Africa aimed at increasing numbers of the African penguin in the wild. About 19% of all African penguins alive today are as a direct result of the rehabilitation work of the Southern African Foundation For The Conservation Of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB). SANCCOB is a registered non-profit organisation with the primary objective to reverse the decline of seabird populations through the rescue, rehabilitation and release of ill, injured, abandoned and oiled seabirds – especially endangered species like the African penguin.

SANCCOB is the only organisation in the world to artificially incubate and hatch wild-origin African penguin eggs and hand-rear the chicks for release back into the wild
