In North America, the range of the red wolf used to extend from Texas to New York, today, the red wolf is the world’s most endangered wolf.

Red wolves are carnivores, mostly hunting small mammals like raccoons, rabbits, and rodents, along with white-tailed deer. They may travel up to 20 miles within their territory in search of prey. Though they are social animals living in packs, they hunt alone. Red wolves are fiercely territorial and will even fight other wolves if needed.

When a red wolf mate isn't available, red wolves may breed with coyotes. Any potential offspring between coyotes and red wolves negatively impacts red wolf recovery efforts.
