More info: All the sea otters at the Vancouver Aquarium, were rescued as orphaned pups and are unable to be released back in to the wild as they would not be able to survive on their own. The northern sea otter, is a keystone species that plays a vital role in protecting the kelp forest ecosystems along the Pacific coast, by keeping sea urchin populations in check.
Northern Sea Otters are known for their luxurious thick fur which consists of an inner layer of dense underfur and an outer layer of longer guard hairs. The fur acts like a makeshift wetsuit to keep the otters warm and buoyant in chilly waters. They have the densest fur of any mammal, boasting up to a million hairs per square inch!
