More info: The Indian rhinoceros, also called the Indian rhino, greater one-horned rhinoceros or great Indian rhinoceros, is a rhinoceros species native to the Indian subcontinent. The single horn distinguishes it from its African counterparts, who have two horns.

Creating folds that look like armour, the skin of the Indian rhino is brownish-gray with raised wart-like bumps on the neck, shoulders, and legs. The Indian rhinoceros weighs between 1,800 and 2,700 kg (4,000 and 6,000 pounds). It stands 2 metres (7 feet) high at the shoulder and is 3.5 metres (11.5 feet) long.

Indian rhinos are herbivores, eating grass, leaves, fruit, branches, and aquatic plants, as well as cultivated crops. They prefer tall reedy grasses to short species. One of the grasslands where the rhinos occur is the Terai-Duar grasslands, which are among the tallest in the world where the ‘elephant grass’ can reach up to 22 ft (7 m) tall. Indian rhinos feed mostly in the cool of the early morning, during the late afternoon or at night. During the day, Indian rhinos spend a lot of time in water or wallowing in mud in order to keep cool.

The Indian rhino is a solitary animal and only comes together with others to mate. The female Indian rhinoceros gives birth to a single calf after a gestation period that is over a year long (about 15-16 months). The Indian rhinoceros calf remains with its mother until it is at least 2 years old and big enough to become independent.
