More info: The African penguin is also known as the Cape penguin or South African penguin. They are found only on the southwestern coast of Africa and are the only species of penguin in Africa.

African penguins play a role in the economy by being an attractant for ecotourism where visitors and tourists can observe the penguins in their natural habitat. Humans, however, are also a part of their massiv decline in numbers due to harvesting eggs for food and money, pollution and competition for food with fishermen.

BirdLife International report that recent data have revealed that the African penguin is undergoing a very rapid population decline, probably as a result of commercial fisheries and shifts in prey populations. The assessment notes that this trend shows no sign of reversing, and immediate conservation action is required to prevent further declines of the African penguin population.

Many of the penguins on exhibit at Georgia Aquarium are part of a Species Survival Plan. Georgia Aquarium aids in the fight for survival of the African penguin, through breeding programs and partnership with organizations in their native South Africa.
