The southern sea otter is dark to reddish brown with a lighter-coloured head, throat, and chest. It has an exceptionally thick coat - the densest amongst the animal kingdom.

More info: Unlike most other marine mammals, the sea otter has no blubber but relies on its exceptionally thick fur to keep warm. Between the fur and the skin there is an air compartment where air is trapped and heated by the body. The sea otter does not have a distinct molting season but sheds and replaces fur gradually all year round. Grooming is important to keep the coat in top condition.
