    Southern sea otters are native to California's central coast and range from San Mateo County in the north to near Santa Barbara in the south.

The female sea otters are rescued sea otters which are not able to be released back in to the wild for either health or behavioural reasons. They have an important role at the Aquarium by being ambassadors to their kind and also by acting as surrogate mothers to stranded sea otter pups.
