More info: The Libearty Bear Sanctuary is home to over 130 resident brown bears who have been rescued from captivity in poor conditions. The sanctuary provides the care and protection needed by the bears, in a natural environment of 69 hectares of forest, streams and pools.
None of these bears will ever be able to live in the wild again as, due to the abuse, they lack the natural skills they need to survive. But the life they have in the sanctuary is the closest thing to being a bear as nature intended, climbing trees, playing in pools and foraging in the forest.
The sanctuary is dedicated to Maya, one of the first bears to be rescued but sadly could not be remedied and died from depression and the abuse she had suffered in captivity.
