More info: Manatees prefer warm waters (around 24 degrees Celsius) and will migrate and aggregate to warm water areas to survive, if water temperatures drop seasonally below a certain point (around 20 degrees) When it comes time for feeding, resting, mating, and calving, manatees utilize secluded canals, creeks, and lagoons near the mouths of coastal rivers.
The diet of a manatee consists mainly of seagrass - grass-like plants which forrm small patchy beds that develop into large continuous beds known as seagrass meadows.
Thousands of acres of seagrass in Florida have died because of nutrient pollution that has caused algae blooms and left manatees without an adequate source of food. Read more about this problem at savethemanatee.org
