Spooky and Frightening Deep Sea Creatures

A team from Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary aboard research vessel Nautilus were exploring the ocean depths off the coast of central California recently when they happened upon a baleen whale carcass. The whale remains –estimated to be about 4-5 metres in length – were buzzing with all manner of marine scavengers.

Deep-sea creatures have adapted to thrive in extreme cold, high pressure, and perpetual darkness by using bioluminescence, specialized senses, or unique body shapes for survival. With no sunlight, some animals have adapted to rely on other senses, such as using electroreceptors to detect prey or having evolved to be eyeless.
