The Nile hippo is one of two extant hippo species, with the other being the pygmy hippo, and is part of the Hippopotamidae family. The common Nile hippo (Hippopotamus amphibius) is the larger of the two, found in rivers and lakes across sub-Saharan Africa, while the smaller, forest-dwelling pygmy hippo is endangered and found in West Africa
