Farmers have been encouraged to use natural rodent and pest control and have provided homes and artificial nesting boxes for barn owls to encourage breeding. The open terrain of the Everglades is ideally suited to barn owls.

These natural predators reduce the need for chemical rodenticides benefitting the famer with reduced crop damage and saving money on rodenticides. Rodents are responsible for millions of dollars in damage to crops and farm equipment each year.
