  • Local time
  • Location: Codfish Island, Aotearoa, New Zealand
  • Source: Department of Conservation
  • Info: Live streaming webcam showing a nesting kakapo in New Zealand. Enjoy watching a rare glimpse of a female kakapo, named Rakiura, inside her nest on Whenua Hou - Codfish Island. The kakapo is a critically endangered, flightless parrot endemic to New Zealand.
Due to the extreme vulnerability of the kakapo to predators, the entire population is managed on offshore, predator-free islands like Whenua.

More info: The kakapo is the heaviest parrot and can weigh up to (9 lbs) and reach in length. They have moss-green, yellow, and black mottled plumage, a distinct owl-like facial disc, and large grey beaks. They can live for up to 90–100 years. They do not breed every year, but only when certain native trees (like Rimu) mast, which happens every 2-4 years.

Adult males and females meet only to breed, and the females raise their chicks alone. During the day, kākāpō sleep in ground or tree-top roosts. At night, they forage for food.

With only around 200 individuals remaining, all birds are named and closely monitored by the Kakapo Recovery programme.
