De Gavers is a former sand extraction pit and with 192 hectares it is the largest nature and recreation area in South West Flanders. A mix of afforestation, nature development projects and recreation. In the center of the reserve is a lake of approximately 65 ha with crystal clear water and up to 15 meters deep in places. Among the birds seen here are: Great Crested Grebe, Greylag Goose, Canada Goose, Mute Swan, Egyptian Goose, Gadwall, Eurasian Wigeon, Common Teal, Common Pochard and Tufted Duck.
