More info: Loons do not return to the nest after the chicks take to the water. Rather, they stay in the water and protect their new offspring from predators, feeding them often and letting them learn the ways of loons. The chicks can provide about half of their own food by the age of five weeks. They are not capable of flight until about nine weeks of age.
Loons prefer to eat fish but will also eat frogs, leeches, crayfish, snails, salamanders, amphipods and insects.
