More info: Hafren Forest is located on the edge of the Cambrian Mountains, 7 miles west of the market town of Llanidloes. It takes its name from Afon Hafren which is the Welsh name for the River Severn.
Hafren Forest was planted by the Forestry Commission in the 1930s. Though still very much a commercial enterprise producing timber for manufacture into pulp for news print, chipboard, pallets, fencing and the construction industry, the forty to fifty year felling cycle allows the Foresty Commission to manage Hafren as a habitat for wildlife as well as a place of enjoyment for visitors.
Ospreys have been nesting at Hafren Forest, near Llanidloes since 2014 and have been closely monitored to record their movements and breeding behaviours.
