An essential focus of the reserve, is the management, development and rehabilitation of an ecosystem that has been returned to a more natural condition after many years of agricultural farming. Shamwari is the oldest private wildlife reserve in the Cape.

Shamwari has Excellent wildlife viewing, including the Big Five. The white rhino is common in the grassier southern half of the reserve, whilst the shy black rhino is quite often seen in the more thicketed and sloping North area.

The main feature of Shamwari is the Bushman’s River, which flows through the reserve. It has a very diverse ecosystem, with five of South Africa’s eight biomes (main vegetation regions) represented: subtropical thicket, fynbos (fine-leaved plants), grassland, Nama Karoo (low rainfall area of shrubland) and savanna).
