The five most common bird species in Germany, close to settlement areas, in 2020, were firstly the house sparrow, followed by great tits, blue tits, tree sparrows and Eurasian blackbirds.

The house sparrow is an opportunistic bird of towns and cities, parks, gardens and farmland. House sparrows feed on a variety of foods, including buds, grains, nuts and scraps, and will readily visit bird tables and feeders. They live in colonies and nest in holes or crevices in buildings, among Ivy or other bushes, and in nest boxes. House Sparrows are extremely aggressive. They will harass, attack, and even kill adult native birds when competing for nest sites, and destroy their eggs and young. They also overwhelm birdfeeders, driving native birds away. The breeding season for House Sparrows begins very early in the spring or even in midwinter.

House sparrows are slightly larger than tree sparrows, measuring up to 15cm from head to tail. Measuring around 14cm from head to tail, tree sparrows are normally seen around hedgerows, farm land and woodland edges. The simplest way to tell the difference between house sparrows and tree sparrows is to look at the head. Tree sparrows have a solid chestnut-brown head and nape, whilst house sparrows have a light grey crown. Tree sparrows feed on seeds, cereals and insects.
