More info: Captiva Island is located north of Sanibel Island, near Fort Myers off Florida's Gulf Coast.

As well as having the bald eagle, Florida is home to 3 other species of eagle - namely the Golden Eagle, White-tailed Eagle and Steller's Sea Eagle. Eagles are a member of the Accipitridae family; which also includes hawks, kites, and old-world vultures.

Both male and female adult bald eagles have a blackish-brown back and breast; a white head, neck, and tail; yellow feet, legs and beak; and pale yellow eyes. The colouring of immature bald eagles is a mixture of brown and white feathers, with a black beak and brown eyes. It takes five years for a bald eagle to attain a solid white head and tail feathers.

In Florida, the habitats of bald eagles are forested areas near expanses of shallow fresh or salt water. The nesting territories of bald eagles are concentrated around inland lakes and river systems and along the Gulf coast. Eagle nests, called “aeries” are usually within two miles of water and are quite large, being built up in size by the returning owners year after year. A record-sized nest in St. Petersburg, Florida was 9.5 feet in diameter and 20 feet tall.
