Great horned owls thrive in almost any habitat, including cities and suburbs, as long as there are trees, food sources, and an open area to hunt. They are often seen perched on a pole or atop man-made structures to scout prey and will readily use nest boxes. These bold predators sometimes hunt during the daylight. Great horned owls nest in the dead of winter and eggs are incubated solely by the female. Since the eggs can freeze, she spends little time away from the nest during incubation. After the eggs hatch, both parents vigorously defend their young and provide them with a steady supply of food.
