Video exploring facts about the Atlantic Puffin:
Puffins excavate a nesting burrow in the soil but where burrowing is not possible, the birds nest under boulders or in cracks and cavities in cliffs. Puffins lay a single egg which is incubated by both parents for 36 to 45 days. The fledging period is very variable, ranging from 34 to 60 days, depending on the area and year. Adult puffins desert their young shortly before they are ready to leave the nest.
Puffins eat mainly small fish, such as sand eels, herring, hake and capelin. They have a modified tongue and a series of spines on the upper palate which enables them to take lots of fish at a time.
