More info: Chacma baboons are the largest members of the monkey family and have a dog-like head, with a prominent muzzle and a heavy brow above beady, close-set eyes. Males have distinctive long razor-sharp canine teeth.

There are three subspecies of chacma baboon : the Cape chacma is found in southern South Africa; the gray-footed chacma, is present from northern South Africa, through the Okavango Delta in Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique (south of the Zambezi), to southwest Zambia; and the Ruacana chacma is found in northern Namibia and southern Angola.

The baboons live in troops which may number several hundred individuals. Within a troop, adult males baboons form a dominance hierarchy that is established and maintained by fighting and aggression. Male ranking is unstable (6–12 months), because young males tend to emigrate between troops and high ranking males frequently lose their status to younger immigrants. In contrast, females remain in their natal groups and form strong hierarchies that transcend generations.

The Chacma Baboon feeds on just about every part of a tree. They eat grass, seeds, rhizomes, berries, mushrooms, fruit, eggs and small animal-like insects, earth worms, birds, lizards, and less occasionally they will kill and eat scrub hares and baby Impalas.
